Fire Prevention Tips

As firefighters, our goal is to assist you in times of need, but the best outcome is when emergencies are prevented altogether. Follow these tips to reduce the risk of fires in and around your home, ensuring a safer environment for everyone. If you have general questions about fire prevention, feel free to contact us via email [Email the station] or phone.

Smoke Detectors:

Place smoke detectors outside bedroom areas and on each level of your home.

Test smoke detectors monthly and replace batteries annually or sooner if you hear a chirping sound.

Familiarize yourself with the sound of your smoke detector.

Cooking Safety Tips:

Avoid leaving cooking unattended; if you must leave the kitchen, take a reminder item with you.

Create a kid-free/pet-free zone around your stove.

Refrain from cooking if tired, under the influence, or on medications that induce drowsiness.

Clean stove, oven, and countertops regularly to prevent grease build-up.

Keep loose clothing away from burners; turn pot handles away from stove edges.

Heating Safety Tips:

Keep space heaters three feet away from flammable items, including walls.

Use only approved space heaters marked by independent testing labs.

Professionally check central heating before each season.

Annual chimney inspection and cleaning are essential.

Use a fireplace screen to contain sparks; keep fires small and avoid burning trash.

Never store propane gas tanks indoors.

Electrical Safety Tips:

Ensure fuses and circuit breakers can handle circuit amperage.

Use only one heat-producing appliance per circuit.

Install ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) in specific areas.

Replace damaged cords; avoid using multiple extension cords.

Avoid running cords under carpets or across doorways.

Unplug and repair or replace any hot or malfunctioning electrical devices immediately.

Plan and practice escape routes; conduct fire drills twice a year.

Designate a meeting spot outside the home for family members.

Identify two unobstructed exits from each room.

Keep combustible materials away from furnaces and water heaters.

Consider installing a home sprinkler system if feasible.

Use TOT FINDER decals on children's room windows and doors.

Store gasoline in an approved metal container with a spring-loaded flapper.

While these tips may not guarantee the prevention of fires or accidents, they significantly reduce the chances of incidents. Share and teach these measures to protect yourself and those around you. Remember, safety starts at home. If you suspect a problem, evacuate first, then call 911.
